Lecture

Classes with this icon will be focused on education. Many lectures cover subjects regarding the environment, gardening and nature as a whole. Teachers will lead a lecture and demonstration where students will gain valuable knowledge on pertaining subjects.

Activity

Classes with this icon will involve movement! These classes frequently take advantage of our outdoor spaces and get your body and mind involved, so wear comfortable clothing.

Floral Tablescaping for the Holidays

Class Description:   Tablescaping is the art of creatively and intentionally setting your table to convey a theme, mood or experience.  A lovely family dinner such as on Thanksgiving or Christmas day is the perfect time to hone your tablescaping skills.  By combining the textures of a tablecloth with florals, candles, place settings and more, we can create a tablescape to enhance the decor of your holiday home.  Our floral designer will be offering suggestions for your Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday tables.  One lucky participant will win a raffled floral piece at the conclusion of the class.  

Instructor’s Bio:  Staff member, Deborah Pomroy, has been designing florals for over 35 years.  After owning her own floral shop for 17 years, Deborah moved on to wedding floral design at Fabufloras in Philadelphia.  She is an Adjunct Professor at Mercer County Community College where she teaches the Floral Design program classes.  She has a BS In Ornamental Horticulture (Floriculture emphasis) with a Business minor from Delaware Valley University.

Advanced Botanical Printing & Dyeing -
Color Infusion

Class Description:  Take your eco-printing skills to the next level.  Learn how to embody gorgeous color backgrounds into your eco-printed textile.  This class focuses on a technique called “eco-printing with a carrier blanket” and has become very popular amongst textile artists around the world.  Beginning with a blank white scarf, participants will create a design on the fabric using plant materials.  A separate fabric will then be used to infuse a colorful background.  Participants are encouraged to have some previous eco-printing experience. After registration, participants will be guided to collect and flatten botanical materials to use or experiment with in their design.  We will break for lunch.  Feel free to bring your own or preorder an optional boxed lunch from our local gourmet deli.

Cyanotype

Class Description: Join us for an afternoon of chemistry and creativity!  Cyanotype is a basic photographic process that uses the sun’s UV rays to create shadowy silhouettes against a vibrant blue background.  Participants will scavenger for  printing materials, or bring your own flat items to experiment with (flattened botanicals, lace, feathers or stencils). Practice on watercolor paper then finish with a final project on a tote bag. 

Instructor’s Bio: Jill Spiro, a former Montessori teacher, has always been drawn to the subject of science, particularly botany.  The plant world has always fascinated her!  During one of her summer breaks, she had the good fortune of taking an eco-printing class with a legend in the field, where she fell in love with using botanical materials to create art.  She is delighted with the freedom and creativity this art form offers.  You can view more about her art and classes at www.littlebnaturalorganics.com

Floral Design in Colonial America

Class Description: With the Washington Crossing Historic Park in our front yard, we value the rich history of our area.  Join us as we explore the history of Colonial floral design.  Colonial Floral designs were sophisticated mass designs generally done in fan or triangular shapes.  They often included fruits or gourds along with locally grown flowers from their gardens.  Learn about the woman who shaped the Williamsburg/Colonial floral design style, Louise Bang-Fisher.  Melissa will demonstrate the use of the Quintal, the iconic five-finger vase.  Create your own pomander to tuck into a beautiful autumnal floral design that you will make in the Colonial mass style.  All flowers, fruit, container and tools will be provided.

Instructor’s Bio:  Melissa Palmer trained under Gregor Lersch in Germany and attended the Boerma Institute in the Netherlands for Dutch Master Design.  Melissa is an instructor of floral design classes at Longwood Gardens and Delaware Valley University.  She is the Educational Director of Bucks Beautiful, a non-profit in Bucks County, PA.  In this capacity, she travels the area filming interesting topics concerning nature and horticulture, as well as writes articles on gardening and floral design for their newsletter.  She owns and operates her own businesses, Florum Flowers and Petaling Posies, where she grows and designs her own cut flowers.

Class Description:  Venture into one of the oldest forms of textiles with this handmade felt making class.  Felting is the process of making thick, soft cloth by combining and compressing loose fibers, wool or hair.  Using the natural fibers of Merino wool, silk and viscose, you will learn how and be guided to make a seamless bag with floral accents for your everyday use.  Pricing includes all materials and supplies needed to create your piece.  Participants may bring their own apron.

Class Description: Explore the primary mushroom species found in our region, including medicinal and edible species, and their studied benefits and uses in nutrition and healing.  You will learn about the functions these mushrooms serve within their ecosystem, the types of environments they inhabit and their effect on the human body.  You will also enjoy an introduction to mushroom identification and then put the skills to practice with a walk in the woods around Seasons Garden Center.  You will learn about safe practices for foraging and different resources to guide you in the future.  Depending on weather and growing conditions, all participants will have the opportunity to take home a sample of an edible and/or medicinal mushroom.  

Instructor’s Bio:   Lauren Lembo has been working with plants and fungi for over a decade.  She has completed certificate coursework in Herbal Medicine and Aromatherapy through the University of Minnesota’s Earl E. Class Description: By definition, our native plants have been existing in our area for hundreds of years.  Have you ever wondered what purposes they have served through the years and how we know these answers?  Our instructor is both a plant enthusiast, as well, as an archeologist.  She is able to fill in all the details to give you a greater understanding of the benefit of using native plants throughout our area’s history.  Learn about the historic and indigenous uses of local native plants and mushrooms used in food and medicine. Join Lauren for a walk around the property to spot plants and trees that still exist in our landscape and discuss archaeological finds and artifacts from nearby that offer clues about early plant life in this area!

Class Description: Composting is a natural process where organic materials decompose and are recycled into a dry, crumbly, earthy smelling soil conditioner known as “compost”.  Compost improves soil structure and moisture retention as it contributes to healthy plant growth by providing necessary nutrients.  In this class, two of our Master Gardener staff members will demonstrate how to compost and why you should compost.  The lecture and demonstration will show efficient ways to layer materials to convert the proper food scraps into “brown gold”.  Learn what goes in and what doesn’t.  Our instructors will show you different methods of composting, as well as vermicomposting, so you can easily incorporate composting onto your home garden.

Class Description: There are beautiful birds all around us.  Elementary grade school aged children are welcome to join us as we explore the world of our local birds.  Participants will describe birds they see or have seen, learn field marks and adaptations, and understand how to use this information to identify the birds.  Each participant will use natural materials, such as petals and seeds, to fill in their own beautiful bird portrait resembling a bird of their choice.

Class Description:   Nature journaling, defined as observing nature using a notebook and pencil, is a powerful and fun activity that elevates your adventures in nature to an entirely new level.  Learn new ways of looking closely, asking questions and using creative thinking to make your own nature notebook in this interactive workshop taught by a local naturalist and artist Jack Hobe.  Participants will learn the basics of nature journaling as well as trying out new skills on plants, animals and other natural objects.  Participants are welcomed to bring their own personal sketch books and favorite drawing pencils. Class Description:  Learn the ancient art of Shibori dyeing.  Shibori involves folding, binding, twisting or stitching natural fabric and then submerging the article in a vat of indigo dye several times.  Variations are a natural result, so each piece is truly one-of-a-kind.  Four Shibori pattern techniques will be taught.  You will then choose which technique you wish to use as you create your own two scarves, set of zippered throw pillow covers or large cotton tote bag.  Perfect for gifting friends and family!  All materials will be supplied and are included in pricing.

Instructor’s Bio: Staff member, Kelly Thompson, is a published garden journalist, Certified Master Gardener, and Horticulturist.  She specializes in vibrant container gardens and small garden design with a passion for native and pollinator plants. Kelly also assesses properties as a garden consultant and focuses on solutions. She enjoys a plant-based lifestyle with a focus on protecting and preserving the environment, all while growing nutrient-dense plants organically.  Accolades include awards from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and Rutgers University.  She donates much of her time enriching families with the Rutgers Master Gardeners of Mercer County.  Her home has been on numerous garden tours in New Jersey.
